“Mirror to Venus” An Exhibition of Paintings by Endre Roder.
Swanage artist Endre Röder, who recently had a successful one man show in Cork Street, London, and shows in Bath and other locations nationally has a new exhibition at Quarr Gallery, 17 High Street, Swanage from 17 July to 1 August.
Endre’s work is eagerly sought by collectors enchanted by his ability to distil a century of more of shifting artistic styles into a single painting and still add a perspective of his own. He concentrates almost entirely on paintings of women, in a variety of settings, from semi-mythological landscape to modern interiors. In a tribute to his adopted home town some are even enjoying the beach.
Röder’s paintings defy brief description. Many contain symbols, perhaps originating from this Hungarian birthplace, perhaps from his Maltese childhood, perhaps from his exhaustive knowledge of painters who have gone before. Many who see them guess at influences ranging from Japan to South America via Paris. In reality he plays a complex game of allusion while at the same time being completely original.
Roder paints with a spare dry brush using subtle carefully graduated matt tones, there is a delicate refinement to his work reminiscent of the intimate painting of the post- impressionists Bonnard and Vuillard. Endre's magic is in his ability to capture the vulnerability, innocence and grace of women, whilst enlivening their characters with an intriguing deep sensuality. His woman fascinate, as it appears that they can not quite be grasped. They sit a gentle distance from the onlooker, never quite meeting the eye.
